The Cathedral of Santiago Apostle is a Catholic temple located in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, named in honor of Saint James the Greater, disciple of Jesus, son of Zebedee and Salome. It has its origins in a parish church that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1842. The current structure was built between 1868 and 1894 and consecrated in 1895. Between the 20th and 21st centuries, it has been remodeled on several occasions. It boasts an eclectic style following the Roman or Latin rite. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros, which was created as a diocese in 1953 by Pope Pius XII and elevated to its current status in 1994 by Pope John Paul II.
